Shams of Tabriz was the famous mentor, friend, and muse of the Sufi poet Rumi. Their friendship sparked a remarkable spiritual awakening in Rumi, who spent the rest of his life creating prolific verse on the themes of ecstasy, surrender, and direct experience of god.
